World Masters Athletics Championships, Perth, Western Australia October/November
2016
This outdoor championship took place just over a year after the last one at Lyon but will revert to every two
years (next at Malaga 2018), with the European version in intervening years (e.g. Aarhus 2017). The championship at
Lyon had been very successful in terms of numbers and host city attractions, with good venues and reasonable travel
connections.
Perth had good numbers competing -over 4000 from 92 countries. The city has a good waterfront and was easy to
get around. Athletes had free local travel and were able to visit the surrounding area, including Indian Ocean
beaches, islands, wineries and the port of Fremantle about 15k away. The weather was nearly always sunny, with the
wind speed and direction affecting maximum daily temperatures, which varied from 18-37 degrees C.
There were two tracks used, the main one at a sports complex west of Perth with a shaded grandstand and outside
‘athletes village’ eating/seating shopping area, the second one (used for distance races) south of the city with a
temporary marquee. Cross Country and shorter road walk events were at Perry Lakes, wooded parkland across the road
from the first stadium. Half and full Marathon runs took place along the south side of the Swan River waterfront,
with good views back across to the city. The organisers provided ample free shuttle buses to transport athletes
from stations to the venues.
The first main event was cross country, 4x2k laps of a flat loop around playing fields and woodlands. Over the
next ten days there was a full programme of track and field events, walks and on the final day marathon, half
marathon and relays.
Highlight performances from VAC members were golds for Brenda Fee (w70 200m), Dalbir Singh Deol (M90 400m), Sue
Yeomans (w60 pole vault) and Ben Reynolds (m50 5,000m). Our members’ results are attached plus all the GB relay
results.

Match Two of the East Surrey League doubled up with the popular pre-Christmas interclub challenge laid on annually
by Hercules Wimbledon. The 5 mile cross country race on Wimbledon Common is well supported by London and Surrey
clubs, with men and women, Seniors and Masters, running together to score points for their clubs. VAC contributed a
team of nine, led home by Mark Cawood, followed by Victoria Carter who finished as third woman. Other VAC members
wore the colours of their first claim clubs, including Sarah Allen, Tony Austin, Gerry Smith, Julian Spencer-Wood
and Dennis Williams.

Fixture clashes forced a reduced
team for the second match in the Surrey League series. Although one short, VAC’s nine-man team produced some great
performances and finished a creditable 7th on the day.
Gary Ironmonger, in his first run
for VAC in the Surrey League, was a welcome addition, leading the team home in 16th position and first M50 in
Division Four. Richard Tweddle followed in 25th position. The SLH men, Mark Cawood and Steve Clancey, great
supporters of VAC, were 3rd and 4th scorers. Ever-present, Carey Gray, was next, leading Edward Skinner and
fast-improving Ian Sesnan. Paddy Clark made a welcome return to racing, followed by loyal stalwart, Alan
Lane.
VAC can still improve its overall
standing, so VAC men, please turn out for the next match at Cranford Park, near Heathrow Airport, on 14
January.

VAC fielded 14 men for the opening
match of the Surrey League. Divisions 3 and 4 ran together, making a record field of 300 finishers. VAC also
co-hosted the fixture, alongside Fulham Running Club and Holland Sports, making our contribution as timers,
recorders, funnel marshals and results compiler. Paddy Clark did a great job as VAC Team Manager.
The distance of the two-lap course
was billed as 5.6 miles but misunderstandings and absent marshals at a key point resulted in an extra 0.8 miles on
the first lap. Fortunately the course was in good condition, the weather was perfect and good-humour was abundant.
Richard Tweddle led the way for
VAC in 21st position and first M55 in the race. The SLH men, Mark Cawood and Steve Vincent, followed,
fighting for every place. Peter Hall made a magnificent cross country debut for VAC as fourth scorer. VAC’s next
three men, finishing within 13 seconds of each other were the Dulwich pair, Graham Laylee and Andy Murray, followed
by the ever-present Carey Gray. Another debutant, Edward Skinner, was 3 seconds ahead of final scorer Liam O’Hare.
Ian Sesnan and Walter Wessely made welcome returns to VAC racing. Alan Lane, a Belgrave man, followed them home,
coping well with the familiar course.
VAC was short of some of last
season’s fast runners and despite a fine performance, finished in 8th position out of the 10 teams in
the Division. It’s all quite tight, so VAC men, please turn out for the next match on Epsom Downs on 12
November.

2016
Dulwich parkrun: VAC
runners (Alan Davidson, Dave Cox, Joe Aspinall, Martin Garrett, Jo Quantrill, Graham Laylee, Richard
Pitcairn-Knowles, Maggie Statham)
Nine VAC members were
greeted and cheered by over 200 regular Dulwich parkrunners on a beautiful sunny morning in south London. The
5km course consisted of three laps of flat, wide perimeter footpaths, which were ideal for fast running and good
age-graded performances. First home for VAC was Dave Cox in 19:04, followed by Steve Davies and Graham Laylee,
who had a fine sub-22 minute run. The next VAC contingent was Maggie Statham, Jo Quantrill and Martin Garrett,
who improves his parkrun time with each VAC outing. Alan Davidson, Joe Aspinall and Richard Pitcairn-Knowles
made good marks, with Richard just dipping under 30 minutes, his best for 18 months. Maggie, Dave and Jo were at
the top of the age-graded results and every VAC runner was either first or second in their
age-group.

Conditions were pleasant, although a little warm, for the two packed races in
Battersea. Our Masters guests were welcomed and added spice to the
competition.
Ben Reynolds lifted the McDowell Cup but
was chased all the way by Ian Johnston, who won M45 Gold. Dan Madams won a close battle for third place, and
took M40 Gold. In the second race, Peter Eckersley, who had made the trip from Birmingham, bided his time before
passing Liam O’Hare and running ahead for a fine victory. Liam won M65 Gold. Anna Garnier, getting back to good
form, gained the W60 Gold. Ann Bath’s training for her imminent 24 hour race paid off with a W65 Gold medal
winning time four minutes faster than in last year’s fixture.

The final race of the series saw the winner, Dave Annetts, post a time of 27:41, the fastest for an M50 this
summer, and only 11 seconds short of Ben Reynolds’ course record of 27:30. The race was dominated by ten speedy
guests, who were very welcome in this August fixture which tends to struggle for numbers. The first eight men were
under 31 minutes with fine battles for places. Peter Giles took the honours as the first VAC man. Heather
Martingell was the first woman.
Well done to the ever-presents in the series of five, namely, Dennis Williams, Cliff Collins, Penny Elliott and
Ed Bartlett. Penny is to be commended on improving her 5 mile time significantly in each race, with her August time
over three minutes quicker than in April.

Mark Culshaw had yet another win of the season, and David Bowker from marathon
orientated Fairlands Valley Spartans appeared for the first time in a creditable second place.
Fiona Bishop saw a return to preinjury form, and also appearing for the first time
Michael Neale made a come-back from many years away from the sport to go inside the hour.
Centurion’s Captain Kathy Crilley made a brief departure from her long distance
regime to take part before an imminent 24 hour road race.

* New course record for age-group
|
|
|
|
The turn-out of 45 runners was one of the best in the history of the 5km championship race since its debut on
the Battersea Park course in 2002. Notably, three course records were broken and one was set for the first
time. There were also some great age-group contests with seven M70 athletes battling for medals and five
runners in keen competition in each of the M75 and W50 categories.
Mohammed Ismail added a 5km Championship win to his 5 Mile win last month and again logged a new age-group
course record. His 16:35 time was a big improvement on the previous M35 best of 17:13 set by Richard Tomlinson
in 2007. Paul Cheetham, in second place, chased hard and was only three seconds behind in 16:38. Ian Johnston
followed in 17:15, as first M45, then Stephen Philcox in 17:37, as first M50. Eighth man home in 20:07 was M70
Peter Giles, ahead of all the M55, M60 and M65 winners, shaving three seconds off his own course record of
20:10 set in 2014. Liam O’Hare (M65), Peter Hall (M55), Waldy Pauzers (M60), Doug Milsom (M75) and Richard
Pitcairn-Knowles (M80) also won age-group Gold medals. Finally, a special mention should be made of Cliff
Collins whose excellent time of 25:42 won a Silver medal in the M75 category on the day before his 80th
birthday. Looking good for the M80 rankings!
Anna Critchlow was the first woman in 19:04, improving Cathy Ulliott’s W45 course record of 19:10 set in 2010.
Anna also holds the long-standing overall women’s course record of 18:09, set in 2008 when she was a W40.
Bernie Pritchett (W45) made a welcome return to Battersea Park and placed second woman in 20:05. Bernie is also
the holder of a long-standing course record, the W35 course record of 18:15 set in 2006. Marie Synott-Wells,
timed at 20:20, was third and first of the W50s. Carol Jones (W55), Jane Rowden (W60), Ann Bath (W65) and Penny
Elliott (W70) also won age-group Golds. Thanks to Pam Jones, there is now a W80 mark in the VAC 5km
championship record book. Pam turned 80 a week before the race and established a time of 31:17 for W80 Gold.
Pam has blazed the trail in VAC women’s records and holds the seemingly unbeatable W70 record of 24:56 set in
2008 and W75 record of 27:10 set in 2012.

DNF Mark Culshaw (Belgrave) (G) M50
The race successfully avoided the earlier rain of the day, a smaller than usual field with nearly all the
walkers having raced over the previous three days.
The race was convincingly won by Tor-Ivar Guttulsrod of Hercules Wimbledon, at his first appearance in the
event.
Peter Ryan of Ilford AC gradually shed some time compared to the June Championships, while former Olympian
Shaun Lightman and ever-present Arthur Thomson achieved excellent times given that they had both raced only two
days earlier, Shaun having been selected for the Inter counties 3k competition and Arthur at the Masters 20k in
Coventry.

REPORT
Veterans AC were pleased to host the fourth running of this event on a lakeside course once used as the test
bed for Britain's water speed record round popular beauty spot Campbell's lake with summer temperatures
mitigated by some cloud cover and a strong breeze.
Times were largely a little down on the previous year, however in the headline 10.325 km event overall and
men's winner Malcolm Martin from Surrey Walking Club maintained his position from the previous two years but
with a considerable lead over nearest SWC club rival Dan Maskell.
VAC were pleased to welcome a very in-form Kay Coulson from Guernsey’s Sarnia Walking Club who had flown in for
the day especially for this event and who appeared to have had the best personal performance, despite having
raced in a local track event only the night before.
Andrea Ingram from Lewes AC again showed her potential winning the 5.9k accompanying race which would have also
given her a good 5k time, as she had also had a ladies’ win at VAC’s Gravesend race some months earlier, and
club mate Jo Buckley did really well in the 3k on her first attempt at competitive walking with a respectable
time which would have not have been out of place in a county championship.
The 3k walkers were led home by the ever improving Ollie Hopkins from Lewes AC who added to his string of wins,
just marginally ahead of Jack Childs from Medway & Maidstone.
The race was held to raise funds for Help for Heroes, as a tribute to RAF fighter pilot Jack Fitzgerald.
Thank you letter
