Master Inter-Area T&F Match 16 August 2009

Inter area match at Solihull – 16 August 2009 – VAC team report

For the first time Veterans AC decided to accept an invitation to participate in the Inter-Area match. Trying to ascertain potential competitors and the distraction of the World Masters Championships only a week before meant that team managers Phil Bell and Mike May didn’t get the requests to participate out until a lot later than we would have liked, so that we lost some participants to other engagements and others to overlapping club SCVAC. However we managed to put out a team that came 7th of 10 clubs consisting of 7 men and 1 woman.

To take our lady first, Anna Garnier only had time to do one event, the W50 1500m, but came 2nd in 5.22.8, and her points combined with the men meant that, although we were last in the Ladies’ match, we managed to finish 7th in the combined men's and women's score as well as in the Men's match.

On the men's side our most successful athlete was Derek Wardle, who won the M60-69 400m (61.7) and came 2nd in both the 100m (14.1) and 200m (28.2) in that age group. Our other M60-69 athlete was Walter Wessely, who took care of the 800m (5th in 2.51.4), 1500m (5th in 5.56.8) and 3000m (5th in 13.10.7).

Sadly we had no M50-59s (Phil Bell succumbing to a migraine and not making it to Solihull). In the M35-49 age group we had five competitors. Glen Reddington came 2nd in the 110 hurdles, and Pat Logan stormed to an 11.9 win in the first heat of the 100m, but unfortunately two ran faster in the other heat, so that we ended up with the points for 3rd place. Pat also finished 4th in the 200m in 24.5. In the 400m Gary Palmer was up against the M35 World Champion and silver medallist, but sensibly ran his own race to finish 3rd in 56.5. Gary also went in for extensive point gathering in the field coming 6th in the High Jump in 1.55, and also getting points for us in the Shot and Javelin. Team manager Mike May also went in for some judicious point gathering, picking up 3 points for a token discus throw, and embarking on his first Race Walk (after it became clear we would not have a relay team) in which he picked up 7 points for coming 4th in the age group. Andy Gannaway who had matched his World Masters 800m time in coming 7th in the M35-49 800m was another who opted to do another event once we knew we would not have a medley relay team, doing the 3000m in 10.45.9.

As soon as we know the date and venue of next year’s event we will get the information posted on the club website, and publicised in the newsletter in the hope of getting a lot more members out next year. Although there is only one athlete per event per age group, there were plenty of events available including medley relays for the M35-49s, M50-59s, M60+, and W35-49 and W50+ age groups. The medleys consisted of 200,200,400 and 800 legs, giving opportunities to both sprinters and middle distance runners.
